1892 Arnold Print Works "Hen and Chickens" Cloth Panel/ Uncut/ Framed
Highlights:
Vintage from the 19th century
Description::
Antique Lithograph 1892, printed on cloth. A nesting mother hen and her 4 chicks. Originally meant to be cut out stuffed cloth toys, this “Hen and Chickens” was printed at the Arnold Print Works mill in North Adams, Massachusetts. The lithographs at the mill were produced on long bolts of cloth and then cut separately for sale. A bit of the next chick on the roll can be seen at the top right.
The bonus of this piece is that 5 toys could be had in one printing – a mother hen and 4 separate chicks. Sewing instructions are printed on the cloth at the bottom right. Each chick and the hen are 2 sided and have an oval base. The patent dates are printed on the base of all 5. However, since this uncut cloth is still intact, previous owners who kept this piece in their collection preferred to preserve the lithograph in one piece. The lithograph is professionally mounted in a reproduction period frame with glass front for safe keeping.
The colors of the birds are muted reds, moss green, gold/maize, and grey. The printing is moss green on a beige background. The frame is muted gold.
Condition is excellent with what appears to be a water stain on the lower left on the hen. It is not instantly noticeable unless pointed out to the viewer.
The edges have been cut and are slightly frayed, in keeping with cut fabric. The fabric also shows fold creases since the piece was stored for years.
Wire stringer across the back and ready to hang when it arrives.
Decorating ideas – This piece would work well in a kitchen/dining area with a French theme or country house. A collector might enjoy owning an uncut Arnold Print Works “Hen and Chickens” lithograph.
